The wonderful southern flora

Discover ancient vegetation

Within Southern Patagonia, there is a surprising and wonderful variety of vegetation that defies the area’s extreme climates. On Navarino Island, where the winds are influenced by the Antarctic and the land seems unstable due to the different biomes that make up the area, an incredible ancient flora emerges, silent, resilient, and steeped in history.

The wonderful southern flora

Many of these species have inhabited the area for thousands of years, adapting to extremely low temperatures (even as low as -12°C in winter), strong winds, and the solitude found in the far south of the world. The southern flora is not just a collection of plants; it is a living memory of these incredible lands, of which remnants still survive in the form of lengas, coigües, and southern cypresses.

Biodiversity at its best

These silent yet resilient forests have survived every era our planet has endured: ice ages, migrations, the arrival of humans, and even today they continue to grow at a slow and wise pace, maintaining their ecosystem pristine in the face of all the challenges.

Within these wonderful southern forests, you can find a diversity of species, such as Lenga (Nothofagus pumilio), with its deciduous foliage that colors the forests red in autumn and greenish in summer. This wood is used for construction in the area, allowing for warm, weather-resistant buildings. Our Lodge is built with this wood, which was responsibly sourced to avoid harming the ecosystem.

You can also find Dandelions (Taraxacum officinale), which withstand these Magellanic winds, maintaining their pristine round shape.

Survival at its zero point

These species don’t just inhabit the land: they create, define, and sustain it in all its splendor. Their roots filter water, they produce fruits that feed the area’s native birds and mammals, and their leaves reflect the changing seasons. The ecosystem plays a fundamental role on our planet and for humanity, as is the case for the Yahgan people, given that many of these plants were essential to their survival and spirituality, providing them with various uses: medicine, food, construction, guidance, and even for building their rafts to navigate the wonderful waters of the canals that make up the area.

Today, you can explore these ancient botanical wonders with Errante, exploring the trekking trails we have established to ensure that their ecosystem is not affected and you can experience the luxury of nature like never before.
